Definition
When NMI certification is required
If fuel is sold, recharged to a customer, or billed between businesses, the measurement has to be legally traceable. That is what National Measurement Institute certification provides: a meter whose accuracy is verified and documented to Australian legislation.
Storing fuel for your own equipment does not require it. Selling it, or cross-charging it between divisions or to a contractor, does. The line is whether the litres are the basis of a transaction.
Certification is not a one-off. Regular calibration protocols maintain the certified standard, and the measurement records are what a regulator or a customer relies on if the figures are ever questioned.
Grades
Grades and what they suit
All three are certified. They differ in flow rate and in how much measurement documentation they produce.
| Grade | Use |
|---|---|
| Retail | Consumer-grade dispensers, standard flow. Service stations and retail fuel |
| Commercial | Higher flow with advanced certification and detailed reporting. Transport depots and fleets |
| Industrial | High-volume flow with comprehensive measurement documentation. Distribution terminals and bulk operations |
Construction
How it is built
The certification is in the meter and the paperwork behind it.
| Meters | Certified measurement with verified accuracy |
| Calibration | Regular protocols maintaining the certified standard |
| Flow accuracy | Consistent across operating conditions |
| Documentation | Measurement records supporting compliance and verification |
| Quality assurance | Continuous monitoring of measurement integrity |
| Legal compliance | Adherence to NMI standards and Australian legislation |

Process
Installation and ongoing support
Our engineers start by evaluating your site conditions and requirements, then the equipment is specified to those exact needs. Certified installers handle the setup, and everything is tested and commissioned before handover.
Every installation is handed over with complete compliance certificates and operating manuals, which is what keeps the site audit-ready and the installation insurance-compliant. Professional engineering certification is available where a site or an insurer asks for it.
After handover we run annual compliance inspections, preventive maintenance programmes, emergency repairs, and upgrade or modification work, through an Australia-wide service network.
